The Mindfulness at Ramapo College of New Jersey was opened in 2014 to serve students, faculty and the community at large.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the past 15 years I\u2019ve incorporated principles of mindfulness into my everyday life and my business,\u201d says William, a real estate developer by vocation. \u201cI\u2019ve seen the benefits myself and wanted others to see the benefits of a mindful approach to living life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The stated mission of the Mindfulness at Ramapo College is to \u201csupport faculty, staff and students while serving the greater community as a distinctive center for learning and research in contemplative and mindfulness practices.\u201d Toward that end, classes and programs \u2013 including a speaker series, weekly meditation sessions and an eight-session Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Course \u2013 have been made available to the Ramapo community and the public.<\/p>\n<p>The objective during the Mindfulness at Ramapo College\u2019s first two years, William says, has been to \u201cbuild a strong foundation to ensure the highest quality of programs.\u201d The long-term goal, Catherine adds, is to introduce contemplative studies as part of the curriculum and, ultimately, a degree program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are hoping to create a model that will be used across the country in other educational institutions,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Joseph Ritacco, (201) Magazine.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-down fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-up fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span>Ramapo College Magazine Summer 2014<\/div><div class=\"c_content\"><br \/>\nWilliam and Catherine Krame have lived in Mahwah for 15 years, so when they started looking to build a spiritual center for mindfulness education, their search eventually led them to Ramapo College. \u201cI\u2019ve seen Ramapo grow from a small college into a major learning institution,\u201d Bill Krame said. \u201cWhat they\u2019ve done is very impressive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Krames made a generous donation toward creating the William and Catherine Mindfulness at Ramapo College of New Jersey. Krame, a real estate developer, said he and his wife have meditated daily for many years. Having a Type A personality, he said, he sees the benefits firsthand. \u201cMindfulness has finally been recognized by academics and the medical community as a way of coping and dealing with everyday problems and medical issues,\u201d he said. \u201cThe whole concept is: You cannot alter the past and your future is unknown. All you can control is how you deal with the here and now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Krame\u2019s vision for the school is long term, and ambitious. He believes Ramapo can become the leading institution on the East Coast for mindfulness education. Davidson, Ph.D., Founder of the Center for Healthy Minds, University of\u00a0Wisconsin-Madison has demonstrated real changes in the brain of those who practice mindfulness meditation.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Davidson also reviewed some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2944261\/\">longitudinal studies<\/a> that tracked changes over time with meditation practice.
