\/><\/a>Diaspora,<\/em>\u00a0followed by a Q&amp;A.<em>\u00a0<\/em>In this one-of-a-kind volume,\u00a0Iraida L\u00f3pez explores various narratives of return by those who left Cuba as children or adolescents.\u00a0 Including memoirs, semi-autobiographical fiction, and visual arts, many of these accounts feature a physical arrival on the island while others depict a metaphorical or vicarious experience by means of fictional characters or childhood reminiscences. As two-way migration increases in the post-Cold War period, many of these narratives put to the test the boundaries of national identity. A classic of the cinema and theater of the Cuban diaspora, &#8220;El Super&#8221; humorously chronicles the life of a Cuban family in New York City\u00a0where the title character struggles to survive and get ahead in exile. Professor\u00a0Santamaria-Laorden completed her book proposal\u00a0during her sabbatical last Spring, while she was a scholar-in-residence in NYU. The book proposal was presented and accepted by a well know publishing house during the celebration of the &#8220;Transatlantic Conference&#8221; at Brown University.\u00a0A Q&amp;A followed the presentation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Fall 2015:\u00a0<\/strong>Cuban writer, Mar\u00eda Elena Llana, will present in the Hispanic Caribbean Literature class on Monday, October 26<sup>th<\/sup>.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/major-spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/246\/2014\/06\/Mar\u00eda-Elena-Llana-Poster-page-002.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2615 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/major-spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/246\/2014\/06\/Mar\u00eda-Elena-Llana-Poster-page-002-730x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Mar\u00eda Elena Llana Poster-page-002\" width=\"144\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/major-spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/246\/2014\/06\/Mar\u00eda-Elena-Llana-Poster-page-002-730x1024.jpg 730w, https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/major-spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/246\/2014\/06\/Mar\u00eda-Elena-Llana-Poster-page-002-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/major-spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/246\/2014\/06\/Mar\u00eda-Elena-Llana-Poster-page-002.jpg 1649w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 144px) 100vw, 144px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">A\u00a0journalist, foreign correspondent, short story writer and poet, Mar\u00eda Elena Llana began her career in writing with the beginning of the Cuban Revolution and continues to produce today.\u00a0 Llana published her first collection of short stories in 1965.\u00a0 She continued writing during the seventies, but more for herself rather than for publication, as the state favored socialist realist literature over the magical or fantastic during those years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Llana&#8217;s work includes the collections <em>Casas del Vedado<\/em> (1983, Premio de lat Cr\u00edtica), <em>Castillos de naipes<\/em> (1999), <em>Ronda en el malec\u00f3n<\/em> and <em>Apenas murmullos<\/em> (2005), and <em>En el limbo <\/em>(2009). This\u00a0futuristic film depicts a haunting militarized world in which a global digital network joins minds and experiences.\u00a0An exciting discussion lead by Professor Paula Straile-Costa followed the screening.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Fall 2013:\u00a0<\/strong>Alex Rivera, a thought provoking filmmaker renown for his political satire pieces,\u00a0narratives, and documentaries, came to present at Ramapo College in November.
