Steps to Declaring a Major or Minor:<\/strong><\/h4>\n

  1. Meet with an\u00a0<\/span>adviser from the Spanish Language Studies program<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, to\u00a0start planning your courses.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>The most important thing you do as a first year student is to meet with an adviser from the Spanish Language Studies program\u00a0to start planning your courses. We are happy to meet with you even if you are interested but not certain\u00a0whether you want to major in Spanish. We can help you decide if this major is the right choice for you. As a first year student, you will be told to meet with the\u00a0Center for Student Success<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/a>. This can be\u00a0a very helpful resource as well.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. View the\u00a0<\/span>Major\/Minor Required Courses<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0and review your\u00a0recommended \u00a0<\/span>4<\/span><\/a><\/strong>-Year Plan<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>Also, don’t forget to <\/span>View some of our exciting\u00a0New Course Offerings<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>!<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>Note when viewing your 4-Year Plan that this document is fairly generic and not very personalized. There is a good chance your circumstances may not fit the plan exactly, and that is completely fine. Whether this discrepancy be the result of coming into college with existing\u00a0credits, testing into a higher-level course, or taking time off, a faculty adviser from the Spanish program will be happy to figure out a unique plan\u00a0that will work for you!<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Submit the\u00a0Major\/Minor Declaration Form<\/a><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>to the Registrar.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Important Information Regarding\u00a0Testing\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n

    All majors in HGS must take a language requirement. Spanish majors or minors need not take extra coursework, because they are already working in a language.\u00a0If you’re interested in a Spanish major or minor, and if you have no previous college credits, the placement test you should\u00a0take is STAMP and earn credit for courses by taking the\u00a0CLEP. For more detailed information about scheduling and cost (including online practice tests for the STAMP), please visit the\u00a0<\/span>Testing\u00a0<\/span>Webpage<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

    All majors in HGS are required to gain proficiency in a language other than English. As a Spanish major, you will not need to take extra coursework to fulfill this requirement.     The Extended Experiential Learning Component<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n

    The\u00a0Extended Experiential Learning Component is an exciting component of\u00a0the Spanish Language Studies program that allows students to apply what they have learned in the classroom to real world travel or work experiences. It \u00a0can be fulfilled by completing\u00a0a cooperative education (co-op) or internship, or by studying abroad.<\/span><\/p>\n

    3. Criteria for other work experiences that\u00a0can fulfill this requirement include the following: Must work at least 15-20 hours\/week. Must work in target language and\/or directly with a Spanish speaking community. \u00a0Examples of\u00a0such jobs include various community service-oriented\u00a0projects, as well as\u00a0student teaching, when performed\u00a0in Spanish.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
