{"id":1393,"date":"2013-07-24T07:03:15","date_gmt":"2013-07-24T11:03:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/catalog-2013-2014\/sshs\/substanceabuse\/"},"modified":"2013-10-22T15:24:36","modified_gmt":"2013-10-22T19:24:36","slug":"substanceabuse","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/catalog-2013-2014\/sshs\/substanceabuse\/","title":{"rendered":"Substance Abuse"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Website: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/sshs\/\"> School of Social Science and Human Services<\/a><\/h4>\n<div class=\"facultyTable\"><div class=\"columnSet\"><br \/>\n<div class=\"stackableColumn\" ><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"convenerListing\">Convener:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Stephanie Sarabia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\" type=\"button\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\">About the Minor <\/div>\n<p>Ramapo College offers a minor in Substance Abuse that is primarily designed for students who are interested in substance abuse counseling.<\/p>\n<p>Students will be expected to have an introductory course in either psychology, or social work, as prerequisites for the minor sequence.<\/p>\n<p>The courses in the minor will include:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Substance Abuse (An introductory course that must be taken<br \/>\nprior to core courses).<\/li>\n<li>Drugs and Behavior.<\/li>\n<li>Counseling Substance Abusers I (An overview of counseling<br \/>\nneeds and issues facing abusers and their families).<\/li>\n<li>Counseling Substance Abusers II (Treatment and techniques).<\/li>\n<li>Integrative Fieldwork: Substance Abuse Practicum in Treatment (Intervention or prevention). 90 hours in substance abuse agency setting<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The courses are repeated each year so that they can be taken in as few as three semesters.<\/p>\n<p>The minor in Substance Abuse is designed to fulfill all of the academic requirements applicable towards state certification in substance abuse counseling (Certified Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor). The fieldwork will give a hands-on experience in community agencies who deliver these services. Fieldwork will count towards the fieldwork\/experience hours required for certification.<\/p>\n<p>In the fieldwork setting, students are required to act in a professional manner and abide by ethical guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>The minor will be of particular interest to students majoring in the helping professions such as psychology and social work. Some courses in the minor also count towards satisfying major requirements in psychology and social work. In addition to full-time faculty and staff at Ramapo College, experts from the community teach in the program on an adjunct basis. This provides students with the best combination: excellent teachers who have years of direct, professional experience in the field.<\/p>\n<p>** Disclaimer below<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\" type=\"button\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\">Requirements of the Minor <\/div>\n<ol>\n<li>At least 1\/2 of the courses fulfilling a minor must be distinct from the student\u2019s major. That is, three of the five courses required for a minor cannot be used towards fulfillment of major requirements. A school core does not need to be completed for a minor.
